BLACKSOCKS HITS A HIGH NOTE FOR BRONX SCHOOL

When Swiss music star Philipp Fankhauser collaborated with BLACKSOCKS to debut a line of guitar-themed funky socks, little did he know he’d be helping preserve a music program at a school in the Bronx. The socks-company-with-a-conscious was looking for an opportunity to showcase their new product by finding a cause related to music. They didn’t have to look far.

BLACKSOCKS U.S., based in Manhattan, has launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to buy instruments for students at University Heights High School, whose music department recently experienced severe budget cuts and is about to be cut altogether.

Serving grades 9-12, University Heights High School is located in the poorest congressional district in the country. Many of its students live in poverty and face a great deal of obstacles, from transient housing and abject living conditions to health and environment risks and safety concerns. Despite such challenges, the school applies a holistic approach to education-a key part of its curriculum is music education.

“One way we teach character is through our music program, which was started through the relentless pursuit of our music teacher Colin Pohl, who, despite budget cuts, wanted to give students a chance to be exposed to music performance,” said Hazel Joseph Roseboro, Principal of University Heights High School. “Most of our students have never been exposed to music prior to attending our school. Yet we know that students engaged in music perform better academically and develop a positive self-image. We are grateful for this initiative.”

The campaign, which has a deadline of September 3, has a fundraising goal of $5,000.This amount will significantly help the district and ensure that the music program continues this fall.

“There will be nothing more gratifying than to hand over a check to Principal Roseboro in September so that her students have a music program this fall,” said Lori Rosen, Managing Partner, BLACKSOCKS U.S. “Technology, creativity and self-expression have always been driving forces behind BLACKSOCKS. Now we look forward to using technology, through social media and online crowdsourcing, to help the school’s music program get back on its feet.”
