ASU Expands Fashion Program through ASU FIDM, Embracing Legacy of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising

ASU EXPANDS FASHION PROGRAM THROUGH ASU FIDM, EMBRACING LEGACY OF THE FASHION INSTITUTE OF DESIGN

Arizona State University (ASU) is making significant strides in the world of fashion education through its expansion of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in downtown Los Angeles. ASU’s fashion program will now be known as ASU FIDM, incorporating both the FIDM community and campus, and operating in both Los Angeles and Phoenix.

The collaboration between ASU FIDM and the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts will offer students pursuing degrees in creative industries enhanced educational opportunities. By embedding world-class fashion education within a public research university with global reach, ASU FIDM aims to provide students with access to renowned faculty members with extensive industry experience. The program will focus on career-focused programs and experiences that empower students to make a sustainable and creative impact on the world. Meanwhile, FIDM will continue as a separate educational institution from ASU, with a particular emphasis on academic programs related to business in the creative industries.

Steven Tepper, dean and director of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at ASU, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Leveraging FIDM’s and ASU’s expertise and innovation around fashion and the creative industries will create significantly enhanced opportunities for students.” Tepper believes that ASU FIDM can lead the world in educating for the future of an inclusive, sustainable, and socially responsible fashion industry.

ASU has already begun working with FIDM students to share ASU degree offerings resulting from the expansion. FIDM fashion and design program students will receive guidance on opportunities to either complete their programs at FIDM or continue their education at ASU.

Barbara Bundy, vice president of education, expressed her pride in the FIDM history and legacy, which has served over 70,000 graduates. She stated, “Our tradition of excellence and inspiration will continue to thrive as a part of Arizona State University.” Bundy emphasized that ASU FIDM students will benefit from FIDM’s strong relationships with leading companies and brands worldwide, ensuring they have access to world-class facilities, faculty, and programs.

ASU has been expanding its offerings in Los Angeles in recent years, becoming a hub for educational opportunities in Southern California. With its presence at the ASU California Center, ASU has established a strong foothold in the region. The university’s diverse offerings include the Cronkite News Los Angeles bureau, The Sidney Poitier New American Film School, and the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, among others.
